eHealth in the EU: what's the diagnosis?

According to two surveys in acute care hospitals (those intended for short-term medical or surgical treatment and care) and among General Practitioners (GPs) in Europe, the use of eHealth is starting to take off, with 60% of GPs using eHealth tools in 2013, up 50% since 2007. But much more needs to be done.

European Hospital Survey - Benchmarking Deployment of eHealth services (2012-2013)

A survey carried out in about 1,800 hospitals in the 28 EU countries plus Iceland and Norway measures the level of deployment and take-up of ICT and eHealth applications in acute care hospitals in Europe.

Benchmarking Deployment of eHealth among General Practitioners (2013) – SMART 2011/0033

The study was carried out with the objectives of: a) measuring the level of availability and use of eHealth in primary care; b) examining what drives or hampers the overall level of eHealth adoption. Besides basic ICT information and infrastructures, the key pillars of eHealth that have been measured include: Electronic Health Record (EHR), Health Information Exchange (HIE), TeleHealth, and Personal Health Record (PHR).
